persuade的基本意思是“說(shuō)服”,指通過(guò)曉之以理或動(dòng)之以情的各種方法如勸說(shuō)、辯論、懇求等,能使或已使某人相信某事或者接受某建議而做或不做某事。強(qiáng)調(diào)不僅“說(shuō)”,而且使之“服”。假如只表示“說(shuō)服”這種動(dòng)作,而不知對(duì)方已經(jīng)或者能否“服”,則不用persuade,應(yīng)該用try〔want〕 to persuade。
persuade既可用作及物動(dòng)詞,也可用作不及物動(dòng)詞。用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí),后可接名詞或代詞作賓語(yǔ); 作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí),主動(dòng)形式常含有被動(dòng)意義,即主語(yǔ)是被說(shuō)服的對(duì)象,這種用法通常見(jiàn)于一般時(shí)態(tài),并帶 easily 之類的狀語(yǔ),說(shuō)明“說(shuō)服”的難易度。persuade還可接以動(dòng)詞不定式充當(dāng)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)的復(fù)合賓語(yǔ)。
persuade作“使相信,使確信”解時(shí),其后可接of引出相信的內(nèi)容。當(dāng)of的賓語(yǔ)是that從句時(shí), of須省略。
persuade into可表示“說(shuō)服某人做某事”; persuade out則表示“說(shuō)服某人不做某事或放棄某想法”。
persuade可用于被動(dòng)結(jié)構(gòu)。

to make someone do or believe something by giving them a good reason to do it or by talking to that person and making them believe it

If you persuade someone to do something, you cause them to do it by giving them good reasons for doing it.
If something persuades someone to take a particular course of action, it causes them to take that course of action because it is a good reason for doing so.
If you persuade someone that something is true, you say things that eventually make them believe that it is true.
