1300年左右進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)，直接源自古法語(yǔ)的mes，意為食物的一部分，做飯的過(guò)程；最初源自晚期拉丁語(yǔ)的missus，意為晚餐的過(guò)程。

mess的基本意思是“弄亂”,指與原來(lái)相比,把事物弄得沒(méi)有了一定的順序,也可表示“弄臟”,引申可表示為“粗魯?shù)貙?duì)待”。
mess既可用作及物動(dòng)詞,也可用作不及物動(dòng)詞,用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí),常與副詞up連用。
