contest的本意是“爭(zhēng)論”,現(xiàn)代英語(yǔ)中可指任何善意或惡意的旨在較量能力、力量、耐力、策略、技藝的爭(zhēng)斗與競(jìng)爭(zhēng),也指在競(jìng)賽中一個(gè)人的嫻熟技巧或優(yōu)越性可以毫無(wú)保留地展示出來(lái)。主要用于競(jìng)選、辯論、比賽場(chǎng)合。
contest可用作及物動(dòng)詞,也可用作不及物動(dòng)詞。用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)接名詞或代詞作賓語(yǔ)；用作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)常與介詞 against 連用表示“與…競(jìng)爭(zhēng)”,與介詞for連用表示“為獲得…而競(jìng)爭(zhēng)”,與介詞with連用表示“與…作斗爭(zhēng)”。
