用法辨析
- brother指“兄”或“弟”皆可,“兄”是“elder brother”,“弟”是“younger brother”。但除了必須分清是“兄”還是“弟”時(shí)外,習(xí)慣上不論“兄”還是“弟”,都用brother。在美國(guó)通常不用elder brother,而用older brother。與brother相對(duì)應(yīng)的陰性名詞是sister。
- brother可指親兄弟,也可指同父異母或同母異父兄弟,或繼父與其前妻或繼母與其前夫之子,不指堂或表兄弟。但引申可指“同行,同事”解。
